And How Long Will That Last?

Until Jesus is big enough for the worst person you can think of, He won’t be big enough for you (in your mind). That is because what you’re doing is drawing a line, and assuring yourself that you are safe because you haven’t crossed it. That can seem reasonable, especially insofar as the line seems reasonable. The problem there is that your hope really isn’t in Jesus, but in your being on the right side of the line, and how long will that last?

On the other hand, if you really know that your bad deeds far outweigh your good ones, and that all your good deeds are a pile of dung (to quote Paul), and that you are loved completely by Jesus anyways, you will find yourself able to be comfortable around the worst of sinners. This is because you will know the secret-they aren’t worse than you at all.

All of us have become like one who is unclean,
and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags;
we all shrivel up like a leaf,
and like the wind our sins sweep us away.

Jesus is good news for people who have been swept away by their sins-and for people who think they’ve figured out how to manage them.
