The Smiling Face of God

God moves in a mysterious way
His wonders to perform;
He plants His footsteps in the sea
And rides upon the storm.

Deep in unfathomable mines
Of never failing skill
He treasures up His bright designs
And works His sovereign will.

Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take;
The clouds ye so much dread
Are big with mercy and shall break
In blessings on your head.

Judge not the Lord by feeble sense,
But trust Him for His grace;
Behind a frowning providence
He hides a smiling face.

His purposes will ripen fast,
Unfolding every hour;
The bud may have a bitter taste,
But sweet will be the flower.

Blind unbelief is sure to err
And scan His work in vain;
God is His own interpreter,
And He will make it plain.

-God Moves in a Mysterious Way, by William Cowper

When you are at the point of least faith, God is, as always, at His greatest commitment to you. Your weakness, fear, insecurity, and lack of faith do not threaten HIm. And His plans for you do not threaten you. They every one of them exist to bless you and not to curse you. The heart of the King of the universe beats with love for you.

His way of blessing your story will often be unnerving and inscrutable-but always good. While it will be confusing at times, rest knowing that one day, “He will make it plain.”

  1. I love that hymn. I just sat here reading it, twice, trying to decide which lines are my favorites, and I can’t decide.

    Thanks for posting it.
